Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. AD is characterized by extracellular depositions of beta-amyloid (Abeta) in brain parenchyma and in cerebral vasculature, and by intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles. As in many neurodegenerative disorders, oxidative stress plays a critical role in AD. This study investigated the relationship among oxidative stress, free radical formation and antioxidant activity in AD. We analyzed reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, glutathione (GSH) redox status and antioxidant enzyme activities in blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid of 31 patients with AD and 19 age-matched controls. ROS formation was evaluated by measuring total ROS and the reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio in plasma and CSF, and by analyzing the amount of total antioxidant (reduced glutathione) and prooxidant (oxidized glutathione) species in CSF. Antioxidant enzymes activities were analyzed by spectrophotometry in both plasma and CSF samples. GSH status was investigated by means of a new procedure that included a GSH-dependent enzyme coupled to a GSH-specific oxidoreductase reaction. It was found that (1) total ROS content was higher in CSF than in plasma of AD patients, (2) total antioxidant activity was significantly reduced in both plasma and CSF of AD patients as compared to controls, (3) CSF GSH/GSSG ratio was significantly lower in AD patients than in controls. Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between total antioxidant activity and the severity of dementia. Our results suggest that free radical formation might contribute to the pathogenesis of AD, in particular in the CSF compartment.Q:

It was seen as “an inferior taxonomy” by Allen Newell in 1971, and “not sufficient” by Jean-Claude Vinay in 1983. Further, it’s been demolished by other researchers.
My question: Is this “taxonomy” considered obsolete? Is it still used in modern AI research? If yes, what are the core traits to have a “general purpose” intelligent machine? If not, why is that so? Good question. The answer is “yes” for modern researchers but it is no longer a popular part of AI research.

Newell, Allen. “Physical symbol systems”. Cognitive science, volume 2, pages 285-355, 1972.
Both authors present the JAM approach and both are considered by most to be architects of AI.

The first paper describes a taxonomy that is no longer useful. They have also recently been cited as a starting point for modern thinking about intelligence, but that doesn’t change the fundamental idea.
