On life & Hangouts…
Truth be told in my mind I envisioned that a title like this would be about that long awaited trip to Zanzibar. This is not so far if you think about it, it is thought that counts after all.
The awesome people at 40 days over 40 smiles (feel feel to follow them https://twitter.com/40days_40smiles)organized a session on managing startups; opportunities and leveraging networks with Michael Niyitegeka as the speaker for the evening. Side bar: If there is anyone who saw this poster and did not ‘somehow’ end up at Oasis mall, I only have one question ‘Mwakikozze mutya?’
I’ll admit it, I was hesitant but I had decided to go so I went anyway because if you can’t keep your word to yourself then there is no hope whatsoever left. * I am NOT being dramatic at all*
I might not be able to make sense after this but whatever you remember, ‘Startups are NOT ideas’. Now that we have that out of the way, imma go poetic license on this b!tch.
I don’t know if I will be starting a startup soon but here’s how the evening made sense to me;
1. People are startups; at the end of the day, we want to earn a living while having positive impact on/ in the society.
2. Our biggest weakness as people is that we do not know who we are. This lack of confidence or and search for validation causes us to hop from one thing to another thus never finding happiness because not knowing ourselves means we do not know what it is we stand for.
3. As people who want to live good, prosperous, successful *insert other good life words*, we need to set goals for our lives. These goals should be measurable (daily, weekly, monthly, et al) and manageable. After establishing that, the next step is to determine what it is you need to do to move from where you are at the moment to where that goal is. If the set time frame elapses and the goals have not been achieved, go back to the drawing board and find new, better, smarter, more effective ways to achieve the goals.
4. It is an insight that human beings will always mess up *PG version* and to believe otherwise makes one a fool. So how about you write down that goal you so badly want to achieve, that is to be the purpose of your existence for the next period as you go onto the journey to your big picture? Just bloody write it down because you cannot trust that you won’t forget again when your life is overtaken by events. You know it’s happened before hence the again.
5. All of this on this own would be fine except no man is an island so people need a circle of friends, colleagues and associates for the support. From my understanding, networks work better if it’s a two way street and using roads in Uganda, I know for a fact that one way roads do not work too well but that’s a story for another day.
6. Lastly but not least, take initiative. Do what it takes and then some. Pass the bar, raise it heck build a cell while you’re at it *If you don’t get it, you don’t get it*
Needless to say, it was an evening well spent.
Unrelated: Can April get here already? I just want to be old.
